A Hungarian man who killed an elderly woman by pushing her in front of a tram in Budapest has been jailed for 18 years.

The 74-year-old woman was hit by the 4/6 tram two years ago, having been kicked in the back into its path at the Margaret Bridge stop. The man attempted to flee but was held back by waiting passengers.

The 43-year-old defendant was handed a jail sentence of 18 years without the possibility of parole for deliberate murder, vandalism and disorderly conduct.

During the trial, the defendant, who was drunk during the incident and has a criminal record, denied seeing the tram approaching or deliberatley kicking the woman to fall beneath the tram, instead he claimed that he kicked her because the woman jostled in front of him.
