Coronavirus Update: New measures to protect the elderly come into force today

From today, a person aged over 65 can only go to the grocery store, drugstore, market or pharmacy between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Everyone else can shop at other times.

Restrictions on movement are now in force in Hungary, including a new measure to protect the elderly.

The government is asking senior citizens to stay at home wherever possible. The coronavirus is the most dangerous for those aged 65 and over, or for those with ongoing health issues. If family members, friends or members of the local community are unable to help with shopping, buying medicines or other urgent needs, the local authority is on hand to help.

If an elderly person does decide to leave their home – as it will apply to everyone else – it must be for good reason.

From today, a person aged over 65 can only go to the grocery store, drugstore, market or pharmacy between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Everyone else can shop at other times.

The purpose of this measure is to separate the elderly and younger generations from each other, to ensure no disease is unwittingly passed on.
