Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has said the victory of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party at Sunday’s general election is of great importance “and the best of news” to Hungary.

Results published on Monday morning show that PiS won with 49.3 percent of the vote, comfortably ahead of the Civic Platform (22.3 percent) and the Democratic Left Alliance (10.9 percent).

Commenting on the results, Minister Szijjártó noted that “very serious procedures” are under way against Hungary and Poland in the European Union. It seems Hungary “will continue to have an ally we can always count on” in those procedures, he said. Hungary and Poland could only count on one another in the most difficult situations, he added.
