FM: Old commission was the biggest problem for the EU

The Foreign Minister said that over the course of its five-year tenure the outgoing Commission has made a series of security and economic policies detrimental to European interests such as contributing to the worsening of the migration crisis, opening its borders and inviting millions of illegal immigrants who pose an obvious security threat.

The Foreign Minister has said the best thing about the departing European Commission is the fact that it will be gone.

“Europe has been facing many challenges in recent times and both the number and magnitude of these problems will probably only grow. The biggest obstacle in handling these challenges was the European Commission itself,” Péter Szijjártó told MTI following an informal meeting of the EU’s foreign ministers in Helsinki, Finland.

The Minister added that over the course of its five-year tenure the outgoing Commission has made a series of security and economic policies detrimental to European interests such as contributing to the worsening of the migration crisis, opening its borders and inviting millions of illegal immigrants who pose an obvious security threat.

Minister Szíjjártó said that in the remaining days of its tenure the Commission will do everything in its power to avenge the national initiatives that went against its policy by defending European borders and stopping the inflow of migration.

Case in point is the recent decision of the Commission to only reimburse Hungary slightly over one percent of the additional costs of border defense it has incurred since the migration crisis began in 2015.
