Government brings forward handing out benefits to needy families for start of new school year

The Hungarian government has brought forward handing out benefits to needy families to help them with the beginning of the new school year.

The minister of state said government support for families in September has traditionally been transferred in advance, at the end of August. However, the affected 1.2 million families received the relevant aid this week.

In the case of families raising more children, this amount could reach 100,000 HUF, the minister said.

Minister of State Novák pointed out that textbooks and free or discounted meals are provided for families during the school year.

Between 2010 and 2018, the number of children receiving free meals in crèches, nursery schools and primary schools has doubled, from 300 to 600,000.

In the meantime, the amount of governmental support allocated for this purpose has multiplied by 2.5 times, to 72 billion HUF, since 2010, she added.
