Coronavirus Update: Government to seek Parliament’s support with bill on containment of coronavirus epidemic

On Friday, on behalf of the government, Justice Minister Judit Varga submitted to Parliament a bill on the containment of the coronavirus epidemic. The government is asking all parliamentary groups to support the bill.

With the submission of the coronavirus bill, the goal of the cabinet is for Parliament to confirm the measures adopted by the government so far, and to grant the cabinet a mandate to take further measures necessary for the fight against the coronavirus.

During the epidemic, all necessary means must be made available for the most effective possible action also for the event that Parliament should not be able to remain in session in the usual manner. In the interest of slowing down the spread of the virus and alleviating its negative effects, the government is required to adopt responsible decisions and to introduce, if necessary, unusual and unfamiliar restrictions. Observing these measures, remaining united and maintaining discipline are our most important tasks.

Responsibility now lies with the parliamentary groups: Parliament can only decide on the bill in departure from the normal House Rules; this is subject to the support of four fifths of Members of Parliament. Therefore, the government is asking every parliamentary party and Member of Parliament sharing a sense of responsibility for the health of the Hungarian people to support the departure from the House Rules and to place the bill on the agenda within the shortest possible time.
