House Speaker: Hungary and China “together since the beginning”

Hungarian-Chinese relations have recently been raised to a “strategic level” by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Chinese President Xi Jinping

Following a meeting with Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress in Budapest, Speaker of the House László Kövér said Hungary and China have “stood side by side since the beginning."

Kövér was referring to the fact that Hungary established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China on October 4th, 1949, just three days after the new state was proclaimed on October 1st.

According to Rmx.news, Kövér said that Hungarian-Chinese relations have recently been raised to a “strategic level” by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He added that China is Hungary’s second biggest trade partner after the European Union and in addition to the Budapest-Beijing flight route, direct flights to three additional Chinese cities will start this year.

Li stressed the importance of cooperation and political support of one another’s economic goals, mentioning 5G mobile communications and growing protectionism – a topic that has recently been at the forefront of media attention following the US ban on Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

Li also said China is seeking cooperation with Hungary in climate protection and sustainable development.
