Hungarian school children to receive free textbooks

The price of textbooks has fallen and the government’s spending on children’s meals has been raised

The Hungarian government has announced that some 735,000 school children will receive free textbooks when they return to school this week.

The Human Resources Ministry revealed that the textbooks will be available completely free of charge to two-thirds of all pupils within the Hungarian school system.

What's more, the price of textbooks has fallen and the government’s spending on children’s meals has been raised to 74 billion HUF, Bence Rétvári, member of the national assembly, said.

He added that 90 percent of the youngest children eat free meals at school as the number of eligible children has risen from 92,000 to 318,000 over the past few years.

The government has also raised tax breaks for families and will spend 400 billion HUF more on education next year than the Socialist-led government did in 2010.
