Hungary buys Renoir nude for Museum of Fine Arts

Hungary has bought French impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s (1841-1919) Nude Lady Resting painting for HUF 3.5 billion, unveiled by PM Orbán

Hungary has bought French impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s (1841-1919) Nude Lady Resting painting for HUF 3.5 billion, adding it to the already impressive collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.

Rmx.news points out that more importantly, the painting was unveiled at the opening of the Hungarian capital’s first National Restoration and Warehousing Center that will serve the needs of three Budapest museums.

“All of Europe only has two such institutions: one is part of the British Museum in London, the other the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg,” PM Orbán said at the inauguration of the center.

The center was built in the vicinity of Városliget, Budapest’s iconic city park, which itself is undergoing a major overhaul, within which the Hungarian capital will get three new museums.

The center will house one million works of art and other items from the collection of three museums. Most museums around the world struggle with the problem of storing the overwhelming majority of their collections, with only three to five percent on display at any one time.
