Hungary wins bid to host 2020 European Aquatic Championships

The winning bid moves Hungary closer to proving they are capable of hosting the 2024 Olympic Games

Hungary have moved one step closer to proving they are capable of hosting the 2024 Olympic Games by securing the 2020 European Aquatic Championships, it has been announced.

Budapest will host the European Water Polo Championships in January 2020, then the LEN European Aquatics Championships in May in swimming, diving and synchronized swimming, while a separate European Open Water Swimming Championships will be held in Lake Balaton in June 2020.

The Hungarian bidders also offered LEN the means to organize the first ever high diving European championships in August 2020 in Budapest.

"The decision the bureau took is an appreciation toward the commitment and dedication and the hard work Hungary is doing for aquatic sports," Paolo Barelli, LEN president, said.

The LEN Bureau also awarded the 2017 European Diving Championships to Kiev. This will be the first ever senior European aquatic event in Ukraine.
