Migrant Crisis: 23 illegal Afghan immigrants arrested over weekend

The migrants are being detained in custody at the district police station pending criminal procedures

Hungarian police have said they apprehended 23 illegal Afghan immigrants in Budapest on Saturday night. 

According to reports, the Afghani citizens were attempting to travel to Western Europe through Hungary illegally.

In a statement published on the Budapest Police Headquarters website, it states that police officers stopped a van in the capital’s 11th District; in addition to the driver, 22 other Afghan citizens were found in the back of the vehicle.

An identity check revealed that none of the people on board had any of the documents required to legally enter or reside in the European Union. The passengers told police they wanted to get to Western Europe.

The migrants were remanded in custody at the district police station pending criminal procedures, the statement reads.
