New thriller 'The Alienist' to be filmed in Budapest

The Alienist will use Budapest as an 1890s New York City when it starts filming in early 2017

A new thriller series will be filmed in Budapest next year, it has been revealed.

The Alienist will use Budapest as an 1890s New York City when it starts filming in early 2017, KFTV.com writes today.

Based on a novel by Caleb Carr, the TNT network will tell the story of a criminal psychologist – known at the time as an ‘alienist’ – who helps track down one of New York’s first serial killers.

“TNT is the perfect home for Caleb Carr's intense and emotional crime story during the iconic gilded age in New York's history,” said Amy Powell, president of Paramount Television and Digital Entertainment.

“Paramount TV is excited to add this psychological thrill ride to our upcoming slate.”

Budapest is a popular eastern European filming location. The Hungarian capital can double for cities around the world and producers can claim a 25 percent rebate as a filming incentive.

American filmmaker Ron Howard and actor Tom Hanks were high-profile visitors to Budapest’s Origo Studios earlier this year for their adaptation of Dan Brown’s Inferno, a follow-up to The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. A sequel to the sci-fi classic Blade Runner also chose Budapest as its production base.

Previously, Ridley Scott based his sci-fi hit The Martian in the Hungarian capital and built the surface of Mars on a sound stage at Korda Studios.

The city has also recently doubled for period Paris in a reboot of the British TV drama Maigret.
