PM Orbán attends China-CEE summit in Croatia

PM Orbán will also have a bilateral meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang on the sidelines of the event

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán left for Dubrovnik on Thursday to attend the China-CEE summit in Croatia.

According to MTI, PM Orbán will also have a bilateral meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang on the sidelines of the event.

The China-CEE initiative, also known as16+1 due to the number of countries involved - China being the plus one - was launched in Budapest in 2012 and while its original focus was on Central Europe, this has gradually shifted towards the Western Balkans.

The cooperation is part of China's larger One Belt, One Road economic initiative. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, expectations are that Greece will also join the initiative at the Dubrovnik Summit, thus making it 17+1.

Greece is also a significant target of Chinese economic expansion - over the past few years China has bought controlling stakes in a series of European ports, including the Greek Mediterranean port of Piraeus which it wants to develop into Europe's second largest port.
