Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will meet the European People's Party caucus leader Manfred Weber today in an attempt to smooth over the differences between the party and Hungary's ruling Fidesz.
According to Rmx.news, the meeting will be held behind closed doors. The two most likely outcomes are that either Fidesz' EPP membership will be postponed or they could work out some sort of compromise.
Several international developments within the EPP point in this direction: several EPP leaders - including Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Markus Söder and Sebastian Kurz have proposed the party sends a fact-finding committee to Hungary. The establishment of such a committee is seen as an attempt to prevent or at least delay the exclusion of Fidesz from the party.
Last week Weber said Fidesz could remain in the EPP on three conditions: ending the government's campaign against Brussels, apologizing to EPP member parties and allow the Central European University to remain in Budapest.
Thirteen of the EPP's 70 constituent parties have initiated a motion to expel Fidesz from the EPP, and former Romanian President and honorary president of the conservative People's Movement Party Traian Băsescu said his party will vote against Fidesz.
