President Trump praises PM Orbán’s anti-migration efforts

“I would like to express that we are proud to stand together with the United States in the fight against illegal migration, terrorism and to protect and help the Christian communities around the world,” PM Orbán said

President Donald Trump has said that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is doing a good job of defending Hungary from migrants.

“Viktor Orbán has done a tremendous job in so many ways, highly respected, respected all over Europe (…). You’ve done a good job – you kept your country safe,” President Trump said after the pair's bilateral meeting at the White House.

In a press release prior to the meeting, the White House said the meeting was in the context of the 20th anniversary of Hungary joining NATO. It was the first top-level US-Hungarian meeting in 14 years.

PM Orbán said “we are proud that so many Hungarians contributed to the tremendous progress of the United States”, adding that “I am very happy to be here again”. PM Orbán’s first visit to the White House was in 1998 at the invitation of President Clinton.

“I would like to express that we are proud to stand together with the United States in the fight against illegal migration, terrorism and to protect and help the Christian communities around the world,” PM Orbán said.

A meeting followed which included the two countries’ delegations and focused on global issues and trade.
