Syrian placed in detention following sexual harassment of Hungarian woman

The Budapest police force is currently carrying out an investigation and the decision has not yet been finalized

A Syrian man has been placed in pre-trial detention, charged with sexual harassment, the Budapest public prosecutor’s office has announced.

According to MTI, the Syrian man, claiming to be a Greek citizen, met a Hungarian woman in a Budapest bar in the early hours of Sunday and they became intimate with her consent, but he became violent and the situation escalated into harassment.

Andrea Üveges, deputy chief prosecutor, said the man became increasingly forceful and rough so the woman asked him to stop, he refused and subjected her to sexual violence.

The Syrian man has no permanent place of residence in Hungary, his personal circumstances are undefined and his alleged crime is of a serious nature. Only the strictest measures will guarantee his participation in proceedings, which was the reason for proposing pre-trail detention, Üveges said.

The Budapest police force is currently carrying out an investigation and the decision has not yet been finalized.
