Tibor Benedek steps down as Hungary's water polo coach

Under Benedek, Hungary won the world championships, a silver medal at the 2014 European Championship and a bronze in 2016, but finished a disappointing fifth at this year's Rio Olympic Games

The head coach of Hungary's national water polo team has stepped down from his position, following a lack of success at the Rio Olympic Games.

Tibor Benedek has said that he will not seek to renew his contract when it expires at the end of the year.

Benedek, who as a player won Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008, has coached the team since 2013, winning the world championships in his first year as coach.

Benedek said in a statement released by the Hungarian water polo federation that he had recently "evaluated the period left behind." He did not offer a more detailed reasons for his decision.

Under Benedek, Hungary also won a silver medal at the 2014 European Championship and a bronze in 2016, but finished a disappointing fifth at this year's Rio Olympics.
