Speaking at the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on Monday, Olivér Várhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, said that in order to maintain its credibility, the EU must “speed up” accession for the Western Balkans and “make it more dynamic.”
Regarding Olivér Várhelyi’s new position as European Commissioner, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasized the importance of the Neighborhood and Enlargement portfolio. The prime minister also talked about next year’s agenda and maintaining the country’s economic success.
State Secretary Zoltán Kovács has highlighted how Hungarian opposition MEPs have failed in their “shameful and hostile” attack to derail Olivér Várhelyi’s candidacy for the post of Hungary’s EU commissioner.
Olivér Várhelyi's only objective is “to represent the European Union’s political priorities towards our enlargement and neighborhood partners and to work in a genuine European spirit in the Western Balkans, as well as in the relationship with our Eastern and Southern neighbors.”
“We must not separate national and European interests from each other, as we should work towards the common good. In the end, the ultimate goal is to create a strong and successful community,” Olivér Várhelyi said at a hearing in the EP this morning.
