EPP group leader Manfred Weber stated in an online press conference on December 3 that the notorious rule of law mechanism, designed to force Member States into altering their stance on key policy areas, is not being set up expressly against Hungary and Poland. According to PM Orbán, however, the truth is completely the opposite. The following is the official, English language transcript of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's response to Weber.
“We will stick to the position we took in the summer: EU countries with high debt-to-GDP ratio will find themselves in big trouble. The second wave of the coronavirus won’t go easy on them,” PM Orbán said in an interview with Kossuth Rádió this morning. Besides EU affairs, the PM talked about George Soros and his influence on European politics, the coronavirus vaccine and the potential coronavirus situation in Hungary during Christmas.
After his one-day visit to Hungary, Polish Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed a joint press conference on the Hungarian-Polish veto on the Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Union and the Next Generation recovery fund. The two heads of government also signed a common statement on their position.
Hungary and Poland are once again the black sheep of the European Union because we insist on keeping to the original agreement on the EU budget and recovery fund, delivered by the European Council this past July.
