Bóka: Hungary 'opts-out' from the EU’s asylum and migration regulations

Hungary remains dedicated to the Schengen area, Bóka said, "which has unfortunately become fragmented" due to illegal migration as well as extended and widely introduced internal border controls.

János Bóka, the minister of European Union Affairs, said on Monday that he had informed European home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson that Hungary, like the Netherlands, requests an opt-out from the EU’s asylum and migration regulations should a Treaty amendment take place in the future, and Hungary would initiate the appropriate procedures to this effect

Minister Bóka said on Facebook that Hungary's government was determined to take resolute steps to protect its borders and halt illegal migration, which, he said, jeopardised national security.

"We believe that currently restoring stronger national control over migration is the only possibility to reach our goal and effectively halt illegal migration," he added.
