FM: Hungary interested in cooperation with Romania based on mutual respect

The foreign minister said Hungary would continue to strive for cooperation based on mutual respect, “we will always talk about our plans and goals, and assess the current situation in a tone of respect”.

In connection with a recent speech given by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the Bálványos Summer University, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said Hungary was interested in cooperation with Romania based on mutual respect because “this benefits both countries and both nations”.

The foreign minister said on Facebook that the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest had been summoned to the Romanian foreign ministry, noting that Hungary had previously received Romanian suggestions about which topics PM Orbán should avoid in his speech. Minister Szijjarto said that it had not come as a surprise that the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest had been summoned to the Romanian foreign ministry. The meeting was held in a calm and polite manner and atmosphere, he said, adding that he had received a document from the Romanian foreign ministry with suggestions on the topics to be avoided. Minister Szijjártó said the Romanian deputy state secretary “essentially repeated the same points” but in an updated form since PM Orbán’s speech.
