FM Szijjártó: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Visits Budapest

Minister Szijjártó described Wang Yi as a friend, noting that this marks their 24th personal meeting over the past eleven and a half years. He added that this is the Chinese foreign minister’s first European visit of 2026.

The minister emphasized that Hungary is therefore the first European country Wang Yi is visiting this year, which clearly demonstrates the importance China attaches to cooperation with Hungary.

Minister Szijjártó recalled that during the most recent visit of the Chinese president to Hungary, the two countries concluded an all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. Hungary, the Hungarian economy and Hungarian families have already benefited significantly from this cooperation, he said.

The minister noted that the talks in Budapest will focus on reviewing the results achieved under the comprehensive strategic partnership.

According to Minister Szijjártó, statistics already show that Chinese companies brought the largest volume of foreign investment to Hungary in 2025 as well, and Hungary was once again the top European destination for Chinese investments last year.

He stressed that Chinese companies bring ultramodern technology to Hungary, create highly advanced jobs and provide secure livelihoods, making it in Hungary’s clear interest to further strengthen bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

“While the world continues to stumble from crisis to crisis, Hungarian-Chinese economic cooperation helps strengthen the Hungarian economy,” the minister added.

Minister Szijjártó also underlined that China belongs to the peace camp, and that Hungary and China are both members of the Friends of Peace group.

“We highly value China’s peace efforts, and we are working together to ensure that peace finally returns to our neighborhood, in Ukraine,” Minister Szijjártó said.
