FM Szijjártó: If It Were Up to President Trump, Peace Would Already Exist in Ukraine

If it depended solely on U.S. President Donald Trump, peace would already have been achieved in Ukraine, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday, pointing to recent developments that signal progress toward peace.

According to a statement from the ministry, Minister Szijjártó was reacting to news of a Russian–Ukrainian agreement on a prisoner exchange and the decision by the United States and Russia to restart high-level military consultations. He said these developments demonstrate that Washington is committed to de-escalation.

“Unfortunately, Brussels and some Western European actors continue to undermine peace efforts, but two positive things happened today,” the minister said. He noted that, with American mediation and support, Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war, allowing several hundred people to return home to their families. “This is good news,” he added.

Minister Szijjártó also welcomed what he described as “fantastic news” that the United States and Russia have agreed to restore high-level military dialogue, which had been suspended following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

He stressed that in Central Europe, it is widely understood that stable relations between Washington and Moscow are a key factor in regional security. “When the Americans and the Russians maintain good relations, Central Europe is safe,” he said.

According to the minister, the resumption of military dialogue between the two powers improves not only regional but global security. He described the move as a significant and positive step by both sides.

“All this clearly shows that if it had depended only on the Americans, and more precisely on President Trump and his administration, peace would already exist in Ukraine,” Minister Szijjártó said.

He called on European institutions and leaders to support, rather than obstruct, peace initiatives. “We urge the Europeans and Brussels not to hinder peace efforts in any way and not to undermine the restoration of Russian–American military dialogue,” he added.

On Thursday, alongside the prisoner exchange agreement between Russia and Ukraine, the United States and Russia confirmed the resumption of high-level military contacts, marking a significant shift after years of frozen communication following the outbreak of the conflict.
