FM Szijjártó: Paks expansion progressing ahead of schedule, preparatory works for first concrete to begin next week

Construction of the Paks nuclear power plant expansion is progressing faster than planned, allowing engineers to begin the technical tasks preceding first concrete as early as next week, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Tuesday in Moscow, according to the ministry.

Speaking after the session of the Hungarian–Russian Joint Economic Commission, FM Szijjártó welcomed the accelerated progress of the project. “The concrete plant is already operating, 500 square meters of lean concrete have been poured, and waterproofing is ongoing. Therefore, instead of next year as originally planned, we will begin rebar installation next week, ensuring that the first concrete will be in the ground at the beginning of February,” he said.

The minister stressed that Hungary’s economic and energy cooperation with Russia has always been based on “common sense,” which has benefitted Hungarian businesses and families alike. “We do not intend to depart from this path, regardless of the pressure exerted on us,” he added.

Minister Szijjártó also noted that Prime Minister Orbán and President Vladimir Putin reviewed bilateral relations during their recent meeting, which he said had given “new momentum” to cooperation. He emphasized that despite years of decline, trade turnover between the two countries has begun to grow again this year.

The minister highlighted that he was accompanied to Moscow by 34 Hungarian company leaders, representing firms such as MOL, MVM, and Richter, as well as major players from the agriculture, food, and tourism sectors.
