Foreign Minister warns Brussels against hindering the success of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine

The Hungarian government would continue to do everything it could to support the US president’s peace efforts.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has warned European politicians "attacking the Hungarian government’s pro-peace stance" against "hindering the success of the peace talks" between Russia and Ukraine.

While Hungary has been arguing in favour of a ceasefire and peace talks for more than three years now, "Brussels and the Europeans have been attacking our country for more than three years because of this," Minister Szijjártó said in a post on Facebook on Monday.

"But the election of Donald Trump has brought with it a hope for peace," the minister said. "Thanks to Donald Trump, there are now direct talks between Americans and Russians, and between Russians and Ukrainians again. This has already made the world a more secure place."

"At the same time, everyone is aware that the peace talks will be difficult, which is why we call on Brussels and the European politicians who have been attacking us for our pro-peace stance for three years now not to hinder the success of the peace talks," he said.

The Hungarian government, he said, would continue to do everything it could to support the US president’s peace efforts, adding that the talks would hopefully lead to a ceasefire as soon as possible and eventually a comprehensive peace agreement.
