Hungary's foreign minister has congratulated Andrej Babiš on his election win in the Czech Republic.

Péter Szijjártó, minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, wished him and the ANO party success in forming a government, and highlighted that both countries are heading in similar directions.

The minister's statement points out that both parties represent the same standpoint on a host of important issues relating to the future of the European Union, and that accordingly they could be good allies.

"V4 cooperation is at the focal point of Hungarian foreign policy, and accordingly it is in Hungary’s interests for the Czech Republic to have as stable a government as possible," the statement added.

No party has won the Czech Republic's parliamentary elections with such a high majority since the country gained independence. ANO received 29.64 percent of the votes, with second place Civil Democratic Party (ODS) receiving 11.32 percent and third place Czech Pirate Party receiving 10.79 percent.
