Hungary puts new 2,000 and 5,000 HUF banknotes into circulation

The old notes, first issued before 2016, will be in circulation until July 31 before the National Bank of Hungary starts withdrawing them. From August 1, it will be possible to pay only with the new notes

Following our report in January, the central bank has today issued new 2,000 HUF and 5,000 HUF banknotes.

The deputy governor of the National Bank, Ferenc Gerhárdt, said the rollout will take place over the next few months.

The old notes first issued before 2016 will be in circulation until July 31 before the National Bank of Hungary starts withdrawing them. From August 1, it will be possible to pay only with the new notes.

Banks and post offices will accept the old notes in exchange for new ones.
