Menczer: Ukraine seeks to provoke Hungary into the war

The governing parties' communications director rejected criticism from the Ukrainian foreign minister and warned of threats to Hungary's energy security

Ukraine is attempting to provoke Hungary into the war by threatening the country’s energy security, Fidesz-KDNP Communications Director Tamás Menczer said in a statement on Monday. Writing on Facebook, he also rejected recent remarks by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

“Ukraine is constantly attacking Hungary’s energy security in order to drag us into a war that has nothing to do with us. They act like the Tisza Party: what harms Hungary, benefits them,” Menczer declared.

He criticized Sybiha for claiming that Hungary should not concern itself with comments made by President Volodymyr Zelensky. “If Zelensky threatens Hungary’s energy security—and he did—then we have every reason to speak up,” Menczer said, stressing that as a landlocked country, Hungary can only import gas and oil through pipelines beginning in Russia.

Menczer added that Hungary has already diversified supply routes, pointing to gas imports through the TurkStream pipeline via Serbia. He concluded that Ukraine seeks a pro-Ukraine Tisza-led government in Hungary, supported by Brussels. “We will defend Hungary against them as well,” he stated.
