National Petition delivery begins as government urges Hungarians to reject financing war and Ukraine

Delivery of the National Petition begins on Thursday, with the document set to reach every household by early March, Hidvéghi Balázs, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, announced in a Facebook post.

Hidvéghi said postal workers will first distribute the petition in Budapest before continuing nationwide. He explained that the initiative is intended to give Hungarian citizens a direct voice on whether they support Brussels using European—and Hungarian—taxpayer money to finance the war in Ukraine and the operation of the Ukrainian state.

According to the state secretary, decisions have already been made in Brussels to fund the war and Ukraine “at any cost and for as long as it takes,” regardless of the financial burden this places on European households. He argued that this policy would inevitably lead to higher energy prices and increased living costs for Hungarians as well.

Hidvéghi stressed that the National Petition is unique in Europe, as it allows citizens to clearly express their position on these issues. He called on all those who oppose financing the war, covering Ukraine’s operating costs, or paying higher utility bills as a result of the conflict to take part.

He urged Hungarians to return the completed petition forms by March 23, emphasizing that collective action is needed to send a clear message. In his words, now is the time to put a stop to policies that would force Hungarians to bear the financial consequences of the war.

Hidvéghi concluded by saying the petition is about defending national interests and economic security, and by participating, citizens can jointly send a message to Brussels that Hungary will not pay for the war or Ukraine’s financing.
