New electronic ID cards prove successful in Hungary

The new card includes fingerprints, biometric data, an electronic signature, social security and tax ID numbers

The Hungarian government has supplied some 900,000 Hungarians with electronic identification cards (eIDs) since the beginning of the year, Magyar Hírlap has reported today.

The eID card includes personal identification, including fingerprint and other biometric data and an electronic signature, along with social security and tax identification information.

The new card costs 1,500 HUF for those who wish to replace their old identification cards within 60 days of expiry.

There is no fee for the issuance of the personal identification cards.

The Hungarian Parliament approved legislation establishing the legal framework for introducing the e-cards one year ago.
