PM Orbán: Hungary has a fundamental existential interest in the success of the Budapest Peace Summit

Hungary has a fundamental existential interest in ensuring the success of the upcoming Budapest Peace Summit, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated Monday in a post on his Facebook page.

“It’s a nice thing that Trump and Putin are meeting in Budapest — but how will that make bread cheaper?” Orbán wrote, referring to what he called “the only question” left for “left-wing analysts and politicians” since the announcement of the summit. “Let’s take a look at how,” he added.

The prime minister explained that during the first three years of the Russia–Ukraine war, Hungary lost 9,100 billion forints, equivalent to more than two million forints per family.

“Energy and gas prices soared, inflation skyrocketed, we lost money on sanctions, trade declined, bond yields rose, and the cost of financing the country increased,” he said.

According to Orbán, ending the war would immediately bring economic relief.

“If peace is achieved, all this will end. The Hungarian economy can finally breathe again and return to pre-war growth. Everyone will earn more — and yes, even bread will become cheaper,” he emphasized.

Orbán concluded by underlining Hungary’s stake in the peace process:

“For Hungary, it is a fundamental existential interest that the Budapest Peace Summit succeeds. Let us do everything to make it happen.”
