PM Orbán: Supporting Hungarian communities abroad is the duty of every Hungarian government

Supporting and preserving Hungarian communities beyond the country’s borders is a constitutional obligation for every Hungarian government, Prime Minister Orbán Viktor said in an interview with the Transzilván podcast.

Speaking with journalist Zoltán Kádár, PM Orbán emphasized that the majority of Hungarian society stands behind Hungarians in Transylvania, who affirm that “there is one Hungarian nation, and that nation has no borders.”

“Citizenship expresses belonging to a national community; therefore, anyone with Hungarian ancestry, who identifies as a descendant of Hungarians, naturally deserves Hungarian citizenship — because they are part of our great national community,” the prime minister said.

He underlined that the Hungarian Constitution clearly states the government’s duty toward Hungarian communities living outside the country’s current borders — to preserve, support, and help them maintain their identity.

“It would be completely unjust to exclude them from the right to vote and to participate in elections. That’s why we granted them dual citizenship and the right to vote, and this will remain so,” PM Orbán said.

Regarding support programs for Hungarians abroad, the prime minister highlighted that initiatives such as Szülőföldön magyarul and all programs promoting the preservation of faith, culture, and language serve the interests of all Hungarians.

“We are a global nation — this is how history has shaped us. But no Hungarian should ever feel alone; each must be able to count on the others. The Hungarian government must embody this spirit through its actions — that’s why these support programs exist,” he explained.

The conversation also covered relations between Transylvanian Hungarians and the motherland, Romanian-Hungarian cooperation, the role of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) in both national and Romanian politics, as well as topics such as László Krasznahorkai’s Nobel Prize and the performances of football clubs FK Csíkszereda and Sepsi OSK.
