Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the government’s Home Start housing programme has surpassed all expectations, with strong demand from young people who recognise the scheme as a “now or never” chance to secure their own home. He made the remarks in a Facebook post on Thursday.
The Prime Minister stated that banks are competing for clients, rental prices are falling, and critics of the scheme have been silenced. “We promised that even those who do not vote for us will benefit. We kept that promise,” he wrote. He emphasised that the programme is part of Hungary’s largest ever housing initiative combined with a historic family-friendly tax reduction.
Orbán reiterated his government’s commitment to lowering taxes, highlighting that from October mothers with three or more children will be exempt from income tax for life. “For the first time in the world, here in Hungary,” he said. He contrasted this with opposition tax proposals, which he described as chaotic and harmful.
The Prime Minister also commented on recent attacks against Central European leaders, stressing that Hungary would not allow political violence to undermine its peace and security. He noted that former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis had been released from hospital after an assault and added that Hungary would “defend its peace” against similar threats.
Finally, Orbán said Minister for EU Affairs János Bóka had returned from Poland with positive news from the Polish president, underlining that preparations are underway to rebuild Hungarian-Polish cooperation and relaunch the Visegrád Four in January.
