Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed a meeting of Hungary’s ambassadors on Tuesday, and said the primary goal was to stop Hungary from “being swept up” in the Ukraine-Russia war. Ahead of the meeting, PM Orbán talked to Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and state secretaries of the foreign ministry. PM Orbán said Hungary was taking part in European Union efforts to create peace, but will not send weapons or troops to Ukraine lest the step should risk Hungarian lives.
Meanwhile, PM Orbán said in a Facebook message that Hungary was now stronger than in the past and was capable of maintaining its security together with its allies. PM Orbán also highlighted the importance of protecting Hungary’s economy and preventing energy prices from rising. “We Hungarians must not be the ones to pay the price of war.” He said Hungarians knew the consequences of war “all too well” from history and therefore must not “drift into an armed conflict”. “We have to stay out of this war,” he said. “But we must help the Hungarians and Ukrainians who have left their homes behind fleeing from the war.”
