Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

26 February 2026, Budapest

Things are starting to get serious – even more so now that the Ukrainians have imposed an oil blockade on Hungary. What’s more, yesterday European leaders came to an agreement with Zelenskyy that they’ll continue the war, and so that will take ever more money from Europe for the functioning of the Ukrainian state and for financing the war. The question is whether or not we give them our money. So far I’ve always said no. It’s a great help to me to be able to refer to the clear Hungarian position that the Hungarian people – whom we’ve asked about this – say no to financing the war, do not want to pay for the functioning of the Ukrainian state, and do not accept household energy bills being increased because of the war. So if we want Hungary to stay on track, to protect Hungarian families’ standard of living, then we must commit ourselves to this battle. The Government must say no, and so must the entire country. If we do it right, then – but only then – we can succeed. But in order to succeed, we must first have the will for it. The petition is about us saying, “No – we shall not pay!”
