During a two-day meeting in Szeged, Minister Bóka met with EU advisors from Western Balkan countries to discuss the current state of accession talks and explore ways to enhance the region's connectivity to European networks and the internal market. Both sides agreed on the benefits of "gradual integration," whereby Western Balkan countries would gain access to certain EU programs even before formal membership, creating mutually beneficial opportunities.
Additionally, the minister pointed out that the forthcoming Reform and Growth plans, to be implemented during Hungary’s presidency, will breathe new life into the region's efforts to align with EU standards and move closer to full membership. These plans will also stimulate much-needed reforms across key sectors, from economic policies to judicial standards.
The minister also stressed that the enlargement process must remain merit-based, balanced, and credible. He emphasized that EU enlargement has historically been one of the Union's most successful policies, underlining its strategic importance.
“Economically, security-wise, and geopolitically, the accession of the Western Balkans will benefit the EU as a whole,” the minister noted, adding that "the European Union is not complete without the Western Balkans," as the region’s accession is vital for the EU’s overall strength.
The two-day summit also covered topics such as the rule of law and transparency, which continue to be significant factors in accession negotiations. The minister reinforced Hungary's aim to provide new momentum to the EU-Western Balkans integration process, with a focus on strengthening cooperation and deepening ties during its presidency.
Hungary’s efforts during its EU presidency are expected to deliver tangible progress, underscoring its broader vision of fostering stability and prosperity throughout the region. To this end, Minister Bóka emphasized that while challenges remain, Hungary's presidency will work tirelessly to advance these discussions and lay the groundwork for a more unified Europe.
The meeting concluded with Hungary committing to further engage with its Western Balkan partners through platforms like the upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit and the European Political Community, fostering dialogue and collaboration in preparation for the region's future within the European Union.
