It is not the state’s job to decide whether to paint the stadium in Munich, or any other stadium, in rainbow colors,” Prime Minister Orbán said in the interview, adding, however, that “the colors of the rainbow naturally belong on the streets of Budapest.” The prime minister also pointed to the fact that Hungary will not give up the freedoms it fought for in 1989.
According to PM Orbán, while homosexual people were persecuted in Hungary under the communist leadership, today the state does not only guarantee their freedoms but also actively protects their rights. “It cannot be questioned whether people should be allowed to choose their own path in life. This requirement is the legacy of our freedom fight against the [communist] dictatorship,” Prime Minister Orbán told DPA.
However, the PM added, the education of our children is a task that “definitely belongs to parents,” and Hungary protects this right. On the other hand, “the fight against pedophilia is the task of the state,” and it is the obligation of the state to ensure the protection of children’s physical and mental health.
“With this stance, we are right in the center of European values, in the center of an open-minded, tolerant European Union,” Prime Minister Orbán said. In Hungary, everyone can live freely, but the education of children must remain the sole right of parents.
