Government spokeswoman Alexandra Szentkirályi said that a total of 728,000 refugees have crossed into Hungary from Ukraine since the start of the war. Altogether 23,000 asylum applications have been submitted and 14,000 approved so far, she said. So far, 120,000 people have applied for a temporary residence permit.
According to the national police headquarters, 5,528 people crossed into Hungary directly from Ukraine on Wednesday, while another 4,482 from Ukraine crossed from Romania. Police issued temporary residence permits valid for 30 days to 148 people. Holders of such permits must contact a local immigration office near their place of residence within 30 days to apply for permanent documents. Budapest police received 194 refugees, 89 children among them, arriving by train.
