An Afghan man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Budapest over the weekend has been arrested in Austria.

According to Hungary's police force, 18-year-old Sarhadi Bilal Ahmad sexually abused a woman in the toilets of a fast-food restaurant in central Budapest in the early hours of Sunday.

Reports suggest the offender was detained on a train to Frankfurt in the area of Linz by Austrian police.

The Afghan was granted asylum in Hungary and has resided in the country since early 2017. The man has been prosecuted for indecency on two previous occasions.

Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi called the act "outrageous".

“It is proven every day that immigration represents a danger to Europe and to the security of the European people," Bakondi said.

He said this case fits into a serious of hundreds of similar attacks that have been committed throughout Europe.

“We must recognize that Christian and Muslim culture approaches women and the respect of women in different ways. Europe Christian culture respects, appreciates and protects women," he said.
