Taxi fares are set to increase by at least ten percent at the beginning of summer 2018, it has been revealed.

A proposal has been outlined to the Budapest General Assembly to raise the basic fare from 1.44 to 2.24 euros, the price per kilometer will increase from 0.89 to 0.96 euros, while the price of waiting will rise from 22 to 24 cents per minute.

Zoltán Metál, president of the National Taxi Association, says it will take about 30-60 days after the proposal is approved to implement national roll out, meaning that customers using taxis during the summer season will encounter the new prices.

Budapest taxi fares have not changed in the past five years, but drivers have seen their expenses rise during the same period, with insurance fees going up by 30-40 percent this year and other costs such as car repairs also increasing.
