Budapest's Liberty Bridge to open as pedestrian-only space during summer weekends

The city is planning on closing the Liberty Bridge on weekends following the end of the school term until August 20

Budapest City Council is set to vote on a proposal put forward by Mayor István Tarlós to close the Liberty Bridge (Szabadság Híd) to automobile and tram traffic on weekends.

Official plans and proposals are being drawn up so that tourists and residents can enjoy picnics and summer evenings on the bridge.

Last summer, the bridge was open only to pedestrians due to tram line renovations, and became an extremely popular hangout spot.

The city’s shortest crossing over the river Danube become a hub of activity, from open-air picnics to parties and revelry.

Budapest’s Mayor, István Tarlós said that “this is a gesture we can make to the youth", after agreeing with calls from many groups to open up the bridge as a pedestrian-only space.
