Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after a meeting of the Defence Council

2 June 2025, Budapest

The Defence Council meeting has just ended. It was convened because there is more worrying news from the Russo–Ukrainian war. Unfortunately, despite President Trump's efforts, it's clear that we're not coming out of war but going into it. The bureaucrats in Brussels don't support the US peace plans. They've decided that Ukraine must continue the war. Hungary opposes this. Hungary prefers to support American peace efforts. We must be prepared for the Brussels leadership – which has an interest in continuing the war – doing everything in its power to press Hungary into the European pro-war coalition. We must be prepared for intelligence operations against Hungary and foreign-funded smear campaigns to be stepped up a gear. The Defence Council has taken the necessary decisions for the security of the country. We shall continue to defend Hungary's sovereignty and the security of Hungarian families.
