Following a government meeting in Budapest on Monday, the foreign minister said the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance achieved a “historic victory” in Sunday’s general election. Péter Szijjártó thanked everyone who casted a vote. “We thank you for the trust you put in us,” he said in a video streamed on Facebook.
Singling out the 315,000 voters beyond the borders “who thought it important to participate in a crucial election that will define the future of our nation for a long time”, he noted that the number of voters beyond the borders was double of that in 2014 and up by 50,000 from 2018. “We stand up for our Hungarian compatriots beyond the borders; they can count on us just like we can count on them in important decisions like this one,” he said. Sunday’s election was about “peace or war”, and Hungarians clearly chose peace and security, he said.
