Foreign students enrolled at universities in Hungary has risen to more than 28,000, and is set to grow to 40,000 by 2023, a study has found.

Citing the study presented at a conference at Budapest’s Corvinus University, Magyar Idők said the number is up from 26,000 in the 2015/16 academic year and 25,000 in the year before.

According to MTI, the largest number of foreign students enrolled at Hungarian universities this year, 3,234, are Germans. The second-largest group are from Romania, and students from Slovakia and Serbia are also well represented. Chinese students account for 5.5 percent of the foreign students.

Most of the German students are enrolled at the Semmelweis medical university in Budapest, but several hundred also study at the Szeged and Pecs universities, in southern Hungary.

The University of Debrecen is popular with Romanians. More than 600 Nigerians also study in Debrecen, according to the study.
