Hungarian EPP MEPs vote in von der Leyen as European Commission President

Hungarian EPP representatives have voted in Ursula von der Leyen as the head of the European Commission.

Fidesz MEP Balázs Hídvéghi said that while casting their vote, Hungarian MEPs of the European People’s Party gave her advance confidence but also have firm expectations.

Ursula von der Leyen was elected EC President on Tuesday with 383 votes for and 327 votes against. She is also the first woman to hold the top position in the European Union.

Hídvéghi said von der Leyen’s election gives hope for a more balanced and reasonable European policy and the Hungarian delegation trusts that her leadership will also usher in a new era in European immigration policy.

The MEP added, however, that Hungarians will want to see their interests represented properly as they have made it clear that they want a leadership which stops immigration, respects the Central European countries and does not infringe upon their sovereignty.

“Those countries that defend and will continue to defend the external borders of the European Union are deserving of support, not attacks,” Hídvéghi said.
