Hungarian flag lowered to half-mast to commemorate Soviet forces crushing 1956 uprising

November 4 was declared a national day of mourning in Hungary in 2013.

The Hungarian flag has been lowered to half-mast in front of Parliament this morning to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of Soviet forces crushing the 1956 uprising.

According to MTI, Defense Minister Tibor Benkő attended the ceremony and the event will be marked up and down the country.

In Budapest, the public can light candles at the House of Terror museum and visit plot 301 in the Rákoskeresztúr cemetery, where revolutionaries were buried in unmarked graves during the retributions following the uprising. A memorial concert will be held in St Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest this evening.
