Hungarian government lowers VAT on meat and dairy products

VAT on poultry, eggs and milk was reduced on January 1, and sour cream, cottage cheese and pork organs will soon have a lowered VAT rate

The Hungarian government is working to lower the value-added tax on more dairy and meat products, it has been reported.

According to Magyar Idők, sour cream, cottage cheese and pork organs will soon have a lowered VAT rate, the farm ministry said.

Meanwhile, in a welcomed move, the VAT on poultry, eggs and milk was reduced on January 1.

The reductions are expected to bring retail prices down, as well as to help whiten the economy.

Attila Csorbai, head of the poultry product council, told the newspaper that the lower VAT is “not worth evading” and suggested that “retail prices could go down after a while”.
