The Hungarian government will promote the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism, it has been announced.
According to a resolution published in the latest issue of the official gazette Magyar Közlöny, the government considers it a priority task to raise awareness of Jewish history and customs.
The statement read that the government “is convinced that spreading knowledge in this field can also serve to weaken anti-Semitism and related negative sentiments”.
According to MTI, the government also backs IHRA’s assessment that its definition can be effective in combating anti-Semitism. The resolution tasks the human resources minister with looking into incorporating IHRA’s definition into ministerial resolutions on the publication and approval of the national curriculum and teacher training requirements.
The resolution also tasks the chief public prosecutor with exploring the definition’s incorporation in the training programs of judges and prosecutors.
“The government agrees and supports that historical facts related to anti-Semitism should be taught objectively further boosting the fight against anti-Semitism,” the resolution states. The resolution also notes the government’s policy of zero tolerance for anti-Semitism.
