Hungarians have celebrated Pentecost up and down the country this extended weekend.
Pentecost is a traditional Christian holiday which is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s disciples.
Hungarians usually spend the extended weekend relaxing, enjoying family dinners and events or visiting the open-air baths dotted around the country.
Those interested in the religious element of the holiday tend to visit Csíksomlyó búcsú, which is the Csíkcsomlyó pilgrimage in Transylvania. The pilgrimage is the largest Catholic celebration of the year for Hungarians, attracting between 50,000 and 100,000 attendees each year.
