Hungary supports North Macedonia’s EU membership

The FM said Hungary continues to support border defense with a 30-strong police mission on the Greek-North Macedonian border.

The Foreign Minister has said that Hungary supports North Macedonia’s EU membership, and the expansion of the European Union in the Western Balkans.

Péter Szíjjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, made the announcement following a meeting with Bujar Osmani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for EU accession of North Macedonia.

Minister Szíjjártó said Hungary’s national security interests dictate that North Macedonia become a member of the European Union as soon as possible. He added that Hungary would like to see an EU decision of launching accession negotiations as soon as this July.

The Minister said that migration pressure remains high in the Balkans, which is all the more reason to have greater stability there.

Minister Szíjjártó also reminded that Hungary continues to support border defense with a 30-strong police mission on the Greek-North Macedonian border.
